Every magazine, annual report, and newsletter I've produced starts with the same goal: showing our community the real people and real moments that make our schools special.
Sunnyvale ISD Community Report
Sunnyvale ISD has produced an annual community report since 2015 as its full statement of accountability. As one of the first districts to participate in the Community-Based Accountability System (CBAS) movement, Sunnyvale ISD took this external signaling piece seriously. My role was to write all the content, provide the photography, and develop the initial design concept in partnership with our graphic designer. Collecting content throughout the year, organized around our CBAS "pillars," was a critical part of the work, ensuring the report reflected the full scope of what our district accomplished each year.
Horizons,
Sunnyvale ISD's Magazine
In August 2023, I launched Horizons, Sunnyvale ISD's community magazine, as a richer way to tell the district's stories. Previously, our two-color newsletter offered readers little beyond basic updates; Horizons replaced it with long-form storytelling and full-color photography that gave our community's achievements the depth they deserved. The magazine is mailed to every address in the Sunnyvale zip code and made available digitally, and individual stories are repurposed for social media to extend their reach even further. We made a deliberate choice to prioritize a printed piece: knowing that many of our voters are older and tend to prefer print over digital, Horizons became a key tool not just for storytelling, but for building the kind of community trust that matters most during bond and VATRE elections. The magazine publishes three times a year, a back-to-school and New Family issue in August, a December issue, and a graduation issue in May.
District Newsletters
At Sunnyvale ISD, I created and managed a weekly communications rhythm, campus newsletters went out each Thursday, followed by a consolidated district newsletter every Friday that kept parents and community members informed with timely, digestible updates. At Elgin ISD, I've been working to build a similar structure, providing campuses with training and graphic templates to support consistent, weekly communication. Regular, predictable communication builds trust with families, and it remains a priority I continue to champion.
